Students in Art II have been working their way through the Elements Of Art & Design During Term 1. With this assignment, they were asked to create an image in Relief using a heavy gauge metal foil to emboss their images.
We began by visiting the Knipe Auditorium and the Fairhaven High School Main Floor. We are so fortunate to have such a rich selection of architectural details throughout our high school. It didn't take long before the Art II students found areas of inspiration for their piece.
With sketchbooks in hand, students took time to sketch some preliminary compositions for the relief artwork. Students also used their cell phones to take a series of pictures to use as reference back in the Art Room.
Once they developed a strong composition in their sketchbook, students enlarged their images to a 9X12 piece of newsprint and transferred the image to the metal by scribing over the newsprint. From there it was a matter of creating their relief by embossing the metal forward and backward for 3D relief.
