How can I draw more accurately? Becoming sensitive to an object’s edge will help create a drawing where the lines have more character and variety, to describe the object’s three-dimensional qualities.
Students created an accurate and clean interpretation of a still life, one that describes the object by using a continuous line that is sensitive to each of the objects’ edges. The purpose of this contour drawing is to emphasize the objects’ mass and volume. Consider the entire page when composing your view.
Once students identified the objects’ contours using a variety of line weight (thick and thin line to imply value), some used shading to continue to emphasize the object’s volume (interior and exterior areas of value). By creating high contrast they helped some areas recede and project.
