 Bokeh Photography

Bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens.  Our students  explore this technique using light ropes,  strobes, flashlights, and other controlled light sources.  Students used many objects for subject matter including each other. Students reflected on the process, successes and what they learned form their less successful images.

I really enjoyed editing this piece because it had colored lights and I enjoyed changing the hue of the colored bokeh. I want people to notice the clear focal point of the light in the image. The foreground is very clear and crisp. I want to improve on the glare in the bulb of the light. It bothers me that I can see the reflection of the flash in the light. I wish I could change that.

The problem I had with doing these pictures was that I didn’t think the model was far enough away from the lights behind them or that they only covered themselves with the lights. Because of this, most of my pictures were of the individual lights with the blurry lights in the background. I find editing the photos to be the most satisfying part of the process. I wish i could have gotten both of the lights in focus.

What I found satisfying about the process was getting to put the lights where ever I wanted to and getting to use all my own ideas. When people look at my work, I want them to notice the focus and composition of the photo because I work hard on perfecting both of those aspects, especially in this piece. Looking at this photograph, the one thing I’d like to improve on is making sure the background of the picture is 100% the same throughout the whole picture. Color is extremely important in this picture. I chose to use blue because I wanted it to look like winter and frosty and blue looked really good in the composition of the photograph. ~Francheska

One element I think that is important in this photo is “color.”  I think color is important in this photograph because the swirly thing that is the center of the photo is green and red, so I matched the color by putting a green light in the center of the swirly thing so the colors would match and look better, or cleaner to the person viewing it.  One problem I encountered in this photo was actually getting the green and red swirly stick to stand upwards with the light in the middle of it. Finding the right angle was what I kept trying to do while taking this photo particularly, and I ended up solving this problem by  having the light wires help hold up the swirly stick on an angle. One thing I found satisfying about the finished project of this photo was how cool the blurred out lights in the background fit well with the piece, and it really just looked pretty cool in my opinion. ~Evan
