Fast Shutter Speed
After a study on Adobe Lightroom, camera safety, point of view, exposure, shutter speed, aperture, and ISO students focus on fast shutter speed. One of our Digital Photography assignments is to capture movement in a still, focused, and properly exposed photograph. Students use many moving objects as subject matter including toys, people, bubbles, and water. Students focus on shutter speed priority learning through experience about fast shutter speed and ISO settings for multiple lighting scenarios including indoors and outdoor settings. Students then reflect on their process, what they have learned, what they found successful etc.
Space is a design element that shows up in every photo, and since this is a project about capturing movement it’s important. There is always something that is the focal point of the photo but the space that is filled with lights and shadows help give more focus to the objects. I didn’t know how to work the shutter speed on a camera and wasn’t sure on what to do. However, I increased the shutter speed then increase the ISO and the pictures came out a lot better. The end result is satisfying for me to see. I loved taking pictures of the objects right while they were moving so it looks suck in time forever. I hope people just enjoy the the moment these pictures are stuck in. Looking at these pieces I would try to improve the focus on the objects because some of them seem fuzzy and try to change up the editing a little bit because it comes out of the printer weird. ~ April

The space in the quarter is empty it looks like it is just the Quarter, the table and the book. It is being used in the picture because it brings all of the focus on the quarter. I did not know much about the subject before we started. I did not know that shutter speed had such and effect on the way pictures could be taken. I had a problem with the iso. I fixed it by taking my time and adjusting it so it came out perfectly. The most successful part is the way the edits came out. I am satisfied with how they came out and how they look edited. With The picture of Henry I like the way some of the colors pop more than others. I would change the composition if I revised, the object is always in the center of it not off to the side or top or bottom. With the quarter it is in the center of the picture. With the one of Henry I’d like to improve it by making it less blurry and less of the sun affecting the way the picture came out. ~Dylan

In my photo that has the ball and water for fast shutter speed, I’m going to choose to explain how I used color to help really bring out and show the motion of the photo. Before this project I have used color to show other art elements, but never to show motion through fast shutter speed. In my photo I make the water a blue that compliments the red of the ball that hit it and bounced back up, bringing water with it. Also, it brings out how the water moves once the ball hits it. Some problems that I encountered in showing this art element, was keeping the clarity and quality of the photo, and not ruining it with too bright or dark of colors. I resolved this by finding the right shades of color to produce the image I had in my head. The process of creating images like this is what I really enjoy, even though the finished product is satisfying, knowing what I did to achieve this is what is enjoyable. I want people to realize the exaggeration of the colors which shows how blue water is imagined to be and the contrast of a bright red ball that just bounced off the beaming blue water, that was previously clear. I would like to improve on the angles at which I take photos like this and find the optimum angle to show off the photo. ~Conner

I like setting the scene and visualizing my shot before I even capture it. Sometimes I won’t have my camera with me and I see something that I wish I could take a picture of because I visualize it in my head. I love taking the picture and adjusting my settings to get the correct image quality. I enjoy the satisfaction of getting the correct image settings and getting the perfect picture. The final process that I love is the editing process. Lightroom is personally one of my favorite programs to use next to photoshop and illustrator. I enjoy being able to take the perfect image and taking it a step further and enhance the color and lights and darks. When people look at my work I want them to think that I put a lot of effort into it. It can be really easy to take a picture and with some cameras you can just point and shoot. I want people to look at my work and see that there is a lot more than just pointing and shooting. ~Sam

Before taking the pictures for this subject, I thought the water would give a bigger splash and that I would get some good pictures. In most of them, you couldn’t really see the splash. This was one of the only ones where you could see a lot of water outside of the cup. I like how the focus is more on the center of the cup.
While trying to take these pictures, I had trouble taking pictures at the right time. I was either too early or too late. This was one of the ones where I started taking pictures at the right time. Once I got to look at this picture, I thought that the still water looked like ice. ~Loveigh |
I discovered that the bubbles are hard to take a picture of because of how it moves so quickly and because of the reflections. My outdoor shutter speed picture I didn’t know much about this because I have never used shutter speed outdoors. This is my outdoor shutter speed photo. In this picture you can see the water hitting the tree. What was satisfying about this picture is the fact that the water is hitting the tree perfectly and making it go all different types of ways. I want people to notice how I put a lot of detail in the picture especially in the water hitting the tree. ~Justin

Before we started this I didn’t really know much about this category so it was a little confusing when I had to go to the dropping stick station at first it was confusing because I didn’t know how to drop them at first for the other person like in what type of angle I mean. When people look at my work I want them to notice and look at how good the quality is inside the picture because you have to take a lot of pictures to get your perfect one that’s why I want that to be the first thing noticed in my work. ~Jacob

Before we started, I didn’t know much about fast shutter speed or shutter speed in general. While taking the outdoor pictures, I learned that you have to perfect the focus of the picture before starting to take the shutter photos. What is satisfying to me about the finished product with this picture is the shape of the bubble. It wasn’t even a full bubble yet and the shape of it was really unique and dope to see. The light being reflected onto the bubble is also super satisfying. One thing I want people to notice, especially with this picture is the attention to detail. In this photo I captured a bubble in the middle of popping, and if you have ever seen a bubble pop you know they pop really fast. I like to have a lot of detail in all the pictures I take. ~Francheska

The most satisfying thing was looking at my water pictures and seeing it form differently in the air. You can see the water coming from out the bucket into the air and onto the ground. When you edit the pictures in LightRoom they look 10 times better. When people look at my work, I want them to see the angles and lighting. I want people to see my edits. The textures and the elements used in my pics. One thing I can improve on learning the settings well and to be able to know when I need use the right things to get the perfect picture. ~Isaiah

My first photo is of water falling against a tree. I believe the color is important to this photo, because of how the clear water contrasts with the green grass and brown tree trunk. I knew how shutter speed affected the photograph before I started. I learned that the shutter speed needs to be a lot faster than I thought it would need to be to capture something falling. My second photo is of dominoes falling over. The color is very important to this photo because of how the white of the dominoes contrasts with the background of the photo. I knew that the dominoes would fall over before we started. It was initially difficult to get the dominoes falling while also taking pictures, and most of my pictures were taken either before or after the dominoes had fallen. It was satisfying that the dominoes fell at the perfect position. I want people to notice the slight shine at the top of the domino. ~Chris

In this photo color is one of the important art elements shown. It is shown in the bubble and it really brings out the edges and texture of the bubble. The color is sharp and meaningful and in a way a brings a certain joyful mood to the photograph. Before I started taking Digital photography I did not know how to really take a photo. After taking this class for a short amount of time I now look at every photo differently and notice much more about the photo and now can acknowledge a good photo. What I found kind of satisfying about the final product is that the colors within the bubble are sharp and in my opinion cool to look at , and look pretty good. The one thing I want people to know when they look at my work is that I just take photos for fun and that I usually just do what I personally looks good, and one thing I would like to improve on is my settings, I want to have better ISO and proper shutter speed and better balance when I take my photos. ~Evan
