In order to draw more accurately from observation, we need to train our eyes to look more closely at every detail of our subject. During our line drawing unit there a multiple steps we take in order to strengthen those skills!
1:Blind Contour
Using a continuous line, students draw from observation of each other drawing each other the focus closely on moving eyes along the detail of their subject while their pen moves on the paper. The "blind" part of the drawing references that the students can not look at their paper while drawing. No peeking at all. we use paper of pencils or binder to insure the view of the paper is obstructed.

2:Modified Blind Contour
Students are now drawing large scale self portraits using mirrors. They are still drawing while not looking at the paper, however they are aloud to peek to make sure their pen is in the appropriate place before starting a new feature (so the eyes are actually on the face). Students included detail form their surrounding while using the continuous line to complete these self portraits.
3:Continuous Line with Color
After completing modified Blind Contours we move onto color! Maintaining the use of ink and continuos line, students now draw subject matter of their choice on watercolor paper. Once the line drawing are done, and students employ watercolor techniques to complete their project.
