Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards 2017

About the Massachusetts Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program has been part of The Boston Globe’s commitment to the community for decades, and to the development, education, and well-being of young people in Massachusetts. Thanks to support from the Boston Globe Foundation, the Scholastic program introduces the Boston community to a new generation of young artistic talent and is just one of the many ways the Globe and its audience of readers support local talent.

#FHSart is proud to announce that we have three award recipients from the 2017 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards: Eve Hartig (Gold Key), Serena DeOliveira (Honorable Mention), and Noah Duarte(2X Honorable Mention).

Feminist perspectives on/in Fiber Craft and Design

Fiber-craft evolved from utilitarian to communicative vehicle for meaning making. Through constructing and adorning, we simultaneously create identities and impact visual culture, shifting perspectives of how/what is ad[dressed] and viewed.

2015 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. Each year, increasing numbers of teens participate in the program, and become a part of our community–-young artists and writers, filmmakers and photographers, poets, and sculptors, along with countless educators who support and encourage the creative process. Students across America submitted 255,000 original works during our 2014 program year. Year after year the Scholastic Awards program grows with increased participation from students and increasing scholarships and recognition opportunities.

With 90 years of history behind us and a bright future ahead, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has grown to be the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition initiative for creative teens, and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. Join us as a student, educator, affiliate, partner, or supporter and claim your place within our nation’s creative legacy.

How can K-12 visual arts teachers bridge the gap between their school and the community at large? Why are community partnerships both valuable and necessary in 21st century art education? This presentation focuses on how to design community partnerships that work to strengthen a visual arts program and increase students’ civic engagement in their communities. Types of partnerships such as mentoring, service learning, intergenerational learning, and more are discussed.  Design challenges including locating partners and shared responsibility, recruiting students, costs/fundraising, scheduling, media and promotion/arts advocacy, sustainability, and program evaluation are discussed.  Benefits of forging community partnerships in light of teacher evaluation reform is also covered.
